Defunct since 2021. This was the canonical way to pay a Bitcoin invoice out of a Monero balance without an account, and it is the single most common stale recommendation in older privacy guides. The operators wound it down under money laundering compliance pressure, having first killed their onion service and then cut the per-order maximum from 20 BTC to 0.2 BTC and lower in the run up to closure. The dangerous part is what happened to the name: whois shows xmr.to was created again on 29 November 2023, years after the shutdown, and it now sits on Amazon Route 53 nameservers with no address record at all. The domain is in someone else's hands and can be pointed at a working-looking swap form at any time, so treat any future site there as a stranger, not a revival.
